Cut Your Nail on Friday

Cutting nails on Friday is considered part of the Prophet’s ﷺ broader guidance to maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness, especially in preparation for Jumu’ah. While there is no direct hadith specifying that cutting nails on Friday itself is a distinct Sunnah, scholars have recommended it because it aligns with the overall emphasis on grooming and purification before attending the Friday prayer. This includes taking a ritual bath (ghusl), wearing clean clothes, using perfume, and being in a presentable state — all of which are from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ for Friday. Imam Al-Ghazali and other scholars included cutting the nails among the etiquettes of Jumu’ah due to this context.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Five things are part of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and trimming the mustache.”
(Sahih Muslim 257)
Another narration states:
“Whoever clips his nails on Friday, mercy will reach him for the next week.”
— Reported in Shu’ab al-Iman by Al-Bayhaqi (authenticity debated, but used for encouragement by scholars).
So, while not obligatory or exclusive to Friday, cutting your nails on this day is a praiseworthy act tied to overall cleanliness, spiritual readiness, and following the fitrah — all of which are rewarded in Islam
