Perform Wudu In Islam

Step 1: Intention (Niyyah)

What to do: Make the intention in your heart that you are doing wudu for prayer.
• Note: No verbal saying needed. Wudu is invalid without niyyah.
• Reference: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Actions are judged by intentions…” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Step 2: Say “Bismillah”

• Say aloud: “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah). • Reference: Prophet ﷺ said, “There is no wudu for the one who does not mention the name of Allah upon it.” (Ibn Majah, Hasan)

Step 3: Wash Hands (x3)

• How: Wash both hands up to the wrists, 3 times. • Reference: Sahih Bukhari – Prophet ﷺ started with his hands.

Step 4: Rinse Mouth (x3)

• How: Take water into your mouth, swirl it, and spit it out—3 times. • Reference: Bukhari & Muslim – Part of Prophet’s standard wudu.

Step 5: Sniff Water into Nose (Istinshaaq) and Blow It Out (Istinthar) (x3)

• How: Inhale water gently into nostrils and then blow it out—3 times.
• Reference: Same Hadiths as above. Not optional.

Step 6: Wash Face (x1 minimum, x3 Sunnah)

• From: Hairline to chin + ear to ear.
• Reference: Qur’an 5:6; Hadiths show 3 times is the Prophet’s habit.

Step 7: Wash Arms (x1 minimum, x3 Sunnah)

• How: Wash right arm including elbow, then left arm—each up to and including elbow.
• Reference: Qur’an 5:6, Bukhari & Muslim.

Step 8: Wipe Head (Masah)

• How: Wet hands and wipe over the head once—front to back and back to front. • Reference: Qur’an 5:6 (“wipe over your heads”), Hadiths: Bukhari & Muslim. • Bonus: Wipe ears (inside + outside) with same wet hands. Prophet did this.

Step 9: Wash Feet (x1 minimum, x3 Sunnah)

• How: Right foot first, then left—up to and including ankles. Between toes too. • Reference: Qur’an 5:6; Hadith: Bukhari & Muslim.

✅ Final Step: Say the Dua After Wudu

“Ashhadu alla ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.”
(“I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”)
