Wear Nice Clothes on Friday
Wearing nice clothes on Friday is a Sunnah act that reflects the honor and significance of Jumu’ah in Islam. It’s a day of gathering, remembrance, and worship, so dressing well shows respect for the occasion and for the house of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ was known to wear his best garments on Friday, setting an example for the Ummah to approach this day with dignity, cleanliness, and care in appearance. This aligns with the Islamic principle of presenting oneself well, especially for acts of worship and community gatherings.
It is reported that Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said:
“The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘It is from the Sunnah to wear your best clothes on Friday.’”
— Reported by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman (3/1140)
While this narration is not from Bukhari or Muslim, it has been accepted by scholars due to its support from the Prophet’s consistent practice. Allah also commands in the Qur’an:
“O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid…”
— Surah Al-A’raf 7:31
This verse, along with prophetic habit, establishes that wearing clean and good clothes on Friday is a noble practice and a form of honoring the day.
